I’m definitely a foodie at heart and sometimes I just love to eat, eat, eat!! But last year I was eating the wrong foods all the time! Now don’t get me wrong I still eat crap every now & then but I am more aware now of what I can eat whenever I want 🙂
Processed foods fuel weight gain and superfoods fuel weight loss & a healthy body!
A “superfood” is described as a nutrient rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well being. Packed with sources of clean protein, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, good fats, essential fatty & amino acids and other nutrients that offer deep levels of nutrition.
Not all foods listed here are considered a “superfood” but all have excellent nutritional value!
Here is a list of foods that I never feel guilty about eating!
Mixed nuts with no added salt or flavourings are an amazing belly filler and perfect if your a terror for snacking at night (like myself). I in particular love the Alesto (Lidl) Mixed nuts. It contains walnuts, hazelnuts, cashew nuts & blanched almonds. Walnuts are an excellent source of anti inflammatory omega 3 essential fatty acids, they are also rich in antioxidants. Hazelnuts are rich in unsaturated fats, are good for your heart, help reduce risk of cancer and aid in muscle, skin, bone, joint & digestive health. Cashew nuts are considered one of the worlds healthiest foods because of the low fat content, high level of antioxidants, high levels of magnesium and studies published have shown they can lower risk of weight gain. And lastly blanched almonds can lower risk of heart disease, lessens surges in blood sugar levels and may help you lose weight.
When I first started my healthier living I found myself craving sugar so I turned to natural sugars. And Strawberries definitely fixed that problem for me. I love to chill all fruit in the fridge and munch on them. A lot of people think that because fruit is full of sugar it must be bad for you, but it’s not! I can’t explain it here as this would be too long but it’s all natural sugars and if you go follow LaurasViews on snapchat, youtube and facebook she literally eats tonnes of fruit and looks amazing.
I love grapes chilled! Grapes especially green grapes are my fave! They are considered one of the worlds healthiest foods and Summer time is the perfect time to be snacking on all fruit in general. Grapes are high in antioxidants, vitamin C and manganese. They also have anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, blood sugar, anti ageing and cognitive benefits.
I’m obsessed with sweet potato especially sweet potato fries. Peel, chop, place on a baking tray, drizzle a small bit of olive oil over and sprinkle some chilli flakes. Bake in the oven for about 25/30 minutes. Sweet potato has virtually no fat, very low sugar and high levels of vitamin A. They taste amazing, especially with chilli con carne 🙂
Love the Uncle Bens express rice range. Check out the nutritional value on the bottom of the pouch before purchasing. A lot of them like the Mexican style and Basmati are very low in sugar, fat etc… It is the perfect accompaniment to dinner and very fulfilling 🙂 1 pouch serves 2/3.
Herbs & spices are your best friend when on a health kick. You don’t need to use any jarred sauces from now on (as they are full of sugars & preservatives). You can literally make anything from different herbs and spices, just add in more or less of all different spices. My favourites are chilli powder, chilli flakes, cajun, chinese 5 spice and many more! You can get jarred spices in Aldi, Lidl, Supervalu, Tesco etc…
Freshly cooked meat 🙂 Pretty much any meat/poultry that is freshly cooked and prepared by yourself is so good for you! Chicken, Turkey & minced beef are the 3 we mostly eat. Chicken is very high in protein and has good levels of vitamin B-6, Turkey is low in fat and high in protein, it is also an excellent source of iron, zinc, phosphorous, potassium and B vitamins. And Minced beef is a good source of protein. vitamin B-6 & B-12. Just a note all these meats have no sugar and just add spices, veg and rice/sweet potato to make a super delicious dinner 🙂
Fresh Veg is a great filler! And an abundance of nutrition. I have just listed 3 vegetables here as we would use these 3 the most. Broccoli is listed as one of the worlds healthiest foods, it contains no fat or cholesterol. Extraordinary amounts of vitamin C, vitamin K, chromium and folate 🙂 It has also been known to have detox benefits. Mushrooms have no fat, cholesterol and no sodium. They contain good levels of antioxidants and great dietary fibre, which in turn reduces appetite and makes you feel fuller for longer. And bell peppers are also listed as one of the worlds healthiest foods 🙂 They are an excellent source of vitamin C, have amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits 🙂
This is a random one lol but Heinz Beanz Snap Pots are an excellent source of fibre, virtually no fat and relatively low in sugar. Because of the high fibre I found these were excellent for my digestion which resulted in virtually no bloating. I love the snap pots as there is the perfect amount for one person in one pot 🙂 I usually have beans on toast 2/3 times a week.
And lastly the most important food you should not feel guilty about is the “unhealthy” one!! A take away or a big pizza etc… so what 🙂 We are all only human and if you want a big bar of chocolate go and have it!
Do not feel guilty! I am a lot more relaxed lately with my eating but I do try to eat healthy at least 70% of the week! If you know you’ve been eating healthy & clean and will continue to do so then go for that bag of crisps, slice of cake, whatever it is that you want 🙂 And just pick up where you left off 🙂
It really is all about moderation.
Healthy eating does not have to be expensive or difficult. It is really simple and affordable.
We do our weekly shop in Aldi and our local butchers. Seriously check out your local butchers, they can have some amazing offers!
